Our Story
Australian garlic grown using clean and sustainable practices
Hi there!
We’re Damir & Jo Biki and our garlic story begins as you might imagine, with the dream of offering cleanly and sustainably grown Australian garlic to you….. Oh wait…. A little about us first, to put you in the picture.
Well to begin with, Damir’s background hails from Europe, as does mine. Becoming an Engineer was an early goal and after completing a Bachelor of Engineering degree at 22, he later followed it with a Master of Agribusiness in 2003.
During his studies and working in a surveying and irrigation design company which he co-owned, Damir also helped out on the family’s 600 head dairy farm in northern Victoria.
Being a typical farm boy, tinkering with constructive welding, to “solve problems” was Damir’s go to hobby and if you ask me, more of a necessity when you live on a farm… life was very full.
Then eventually I came along and we settled on a farm in northern Victoria ourselves.
Three years later his dad decided to sell up and moved to the lush Yarra Valley to “retire” … Really? Does a farmer ever retire… anyway it wasn’t long til we followed suit, as my folks were also here in Melbourne.
We spotted a property in Hoddles Creek, lying just under the crest of a hill with 35 acres of picture postcard {remember those} views. It was love at first sight and continues to be every day. So now back to our dream, after doing research and having lengthy discussions, not to mention surveying our “not so flat” land; the idea to grow garlic …which we both love to eat… in off the ground soil filled crates was born.
I can tell you the trialling and tweaking that followed, tested us every step of the way. We could fill a book with our misadventures and mishaps, not the least being the inconsistent & unpredictable weather. Were we a little crazy to be exploring a “un- norm” method like this?… Well, hubby likes to solve problems and as for me; the thought of eating and sharing good clean garlic, grown here where we live, is what it’s all about…so yes, it’s worth it.
